England Day 2 – Day Trip to Cambridge
The next day, a Friday, we managed without TOO much trouble to make our way by train to Cambridge. We had a blast punting! A punt is a flat-bottomed boat that is poled like Venetian gondolas (but in all other ways dissimilar). This took us down the River Cam and by the “Backs”, the parts of the various colleges visible from the river. I even tried my hand at punting and, well, at least I didn’t fall in!
We had lunch at a haunted pub called The Pickerel, a favorite haunt of C.S. Lewis’s back in the day. We poked our head in The Eagle, which is where Watson and Crick would discuss the theories that led to the structure of DNA – I hope that some of the signage inside mentions Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins!
Then we visited King’s College mainly to see the gorgeous chapel. Many of the colleges are closed in May due to “quiet hours” (exam time) but this was open. And walking in the meadow behind, we even saw Luke, our punt guide, again!
The rock with Chinese on it is a memorial to Xu Zhimo, a poet who studied at King’s College, Cambridge.
