Iceland 2026 – The East
Day 5 – Hofn to Egilsstaðir
On Wednesday we left Hofn and drove through the East Fjords, stopping at a few little towns along the way. The scenery is incredible and the weather cleared up beautifully. The drive is a little white-knuckle-y but not too horrible. We made it to Egilsstaðir, where we stayed 2 nights and managed to do our laundry despite the machines being shared among guests.
Day 6 – Second night in Egilsstaðir
The next day, from our base in Egilsstaðir, we drove to Seydisfjordur. We took photos of the famous rainbow street and blue church, as well as the harbor. I made Pete climb a very steep hike up to Tvísöngur, which means duet in English. It’s a cool acoustic art installation meant to represent the pentatonic scale. My voice sounded so good inside; I could probably be a professional vocalist if it sounded like that normally! Oh, the drive here took us over the Fjarðarheiði pass, which was probably the most nervous I’ve been on a drive here so far. (Iceland has turned me into a passenger princess!)
Then we backtracked along the same roads we took the day before for Pete to fly his drone. He’s very excited about the video he captured and I hope I can share some once we’re back home.
After a short nap, we drove out to Borgarfjörður eystri, another fjord, in order to visit the puffin colony at Hafnarholmi. This was such an incredible experience! We spent about an hour there, ate dinner in the town there (Bakkagerði), then we back for another hour plus some! The puffins are right beside the boardwalk. In fact, there was one I could have reached out and touched (but didn’t!). I took so many photos and video with my camera, but they were close enough for cell phone shots which I’m posting here.
